A suspended driving privilege does not itself create a general ban on domestic air travel. TSA identification requirements and the legal right to drive are separate matters.
Use an accepted identification document
Check TSA’s current accepted-ID and REAL ID rules before departure. A passport or other listed document may avoid questions about a driver’s license. Whether a particular card is acceptable depends on the document and current rules, not simply on whether it once allowed driving. [1]
If you lack acceptable identification, check the current TSA ConfirmID instructions before traveling. This alternative verification process involves a fee and additional screening; it does not guarantee successful verification or passage through the checkpoint. [3] [1]
Plan transportation too
Do not drive to the airport while legally suspended. Arrange a permitted ride and carry documents needed for the actual itinerary. International travel also requires the destination’s entry documents.
If the suspension arose from an outstanding warrant or another court restriction, evaluate that separate issue. An otherwise acceptable TSA identification document does not cancel court orders or resolve a criminal case.
Practical application
A passport provides a TSA identification option separate from a driver’s license. [1] Arrange lawful transportation to the airport. For an itinerary crossing a border, check passport and destination requirements as well as checkpoint screening. A boarding pass or booking confirmation does not replace the required identity process.
Check current identity-verification instructions
Beginning February 1, 2026, travelers without acceptable ID who still want to fly may choose TSA ConfirmID. The fee is $45 for a ten-day travel period. A traveler carrying a passport or another accepted ID does not need this alternative solely because a driver’s license is unavailable. Expect added time and follow TSA’s current payment and verification instructions. [3]
Secure Flight separately concerns passenger information supplied for screening. Keep the booking’s identifying information accurate, but do not treat that framework as permission to drive or as an order resolving a court restriction. [2]
