Missed the OPT Employment Reporting Deadline?

If you missed an OPT employment report, provide accurate information promptly and contact your designated school official. The reporting rules generally require changes to specified information within ten days. Do not invent dates or create fictitious employment to repair a record. [1]

Separate reporting from actual employment

A student may have worked lawfully but failed to update SEVIS, or may have exceeded unemployment limits or worked outside authorization. Those are different problems. The record should show what actually happened, supported by employer letters, start dates, duties, hours, and other reliable evidence.

Contact the DSO when the portal cannot fix it

The SEVP Portal has limits, and school officials handle particular SEVIS updates and corrections. DHS publishes student reporting instructions and explains the school’s role. Follow the appropriate correction process rather than repeatedly entering inconsistent information. [2]

Review unemployment and status

Ask the DSO to review the unemployment counter, authorization dates, and any termination notice. A correction request does not guarantee reinstatement or retroactively authorize work.

For example, an employment start supported by payroll records may correct a missing reporting entry, while an invented offer letter would create an additional serious problem.

Check the current authorized-stay framework too

Correcting an employer entry is different from extending a permitted stay. Section 214.1(m) contains September 2026 transition rules for qualifying legacy F/J duration-of-status holders, including specific OPT filing exceptions and fixed-date provisions. A late employment report should therefore be reviewed alongside the actual admission and authorization record; do not assume that a historical D/S notation means there is no extension question. The transition does not automatically terminate every existing F/J admission on one date. A DSO’s accurate SEVIS correction also does not replace a USCIS extension application when the current rules require one. [3]

Keep an accurate correction trail

Save the employment evidence, the information submitted, the DSO’s response, and any SEVIS correction acknowledgment. If an earlier entry was wrong, explain the reason consistently rather than silently changing dates in different systems. Accuracy matters for later visa, status, and employment filings that may compare the same history. [1] [2]

Keep copies of the update and your communications. See OPT and H-1B overlap and status-based work restrictions before assuming a pending petition or portal change resolves the whole case.
