Can a Permanent Resident Invite Parents to Visit?

A lawful permanent resident can invite parents to visit and provide accurate information about accommodation or trip expenses. That invitation does not guarantee a visitor visa or admission, and it is different from filing an immigrant petition for parents. [1]

Visitor eligibility belongs to the parent

A parent seeking a B-2 visa must establish eligibility for temporary travel under the applicable rules, including overcoming the presumption of immigrant intent where required. The proposed purpose, duration, finances, and reasons to return matter. A host’s green card does not replace that assessment. [1]

Permanent sponsorship is different

Parents qualify as immediate relatives through a U.S. citizen petitioner who is at least 21, under the statute’s requirements. Permanent residence alone does not create a parent-petition category. [2]

Prepare truthful supporting information

An invitation can describe the relationship, address, dates, and who pays the expenses. Avoid promises that the parent will work, remain indefinitely, or automatically obtain residence after arrival. The visitor should answer the actual visa and admission questions accurately.

For example, offering a spare bedroom can explain lodging without establishing the parent’s intent to depart.

Explain support without promising an immigration result

A host can describe lodging and planned financial assistance truthfully. The visitor should still be prepared to explain the temporary trip and personal circumstances. Do not manufacture employment letters, property records, return obligations, or a guarantee that the consulate will accept the invitation. A close family tie in the United States can be relevant context but is not a statutory promise of approval. If the permanent-resident child later naturalizes and meets the age requirement, a parent immigrant petition becomes a different question under the immediate-relative rules. That later possibility should not be concealed or converted into a plan to misuse a visitor admission. Review the parent’s actual purpose and any pending petition accurately. A lawful future immigration route and current eligibility for a temporary visit must each be evaluated on their own facts. [1] [2]

After arrival, check the I-94 rather than assuming the visa’s expiration sets the permitted stay. See visitor extension requests and what an I-94 does and does not authorize. An invitation is not permission to work.
