Use the DS-160 home-address field to describe where you actually live, following the question and the form’s current instructions. Do not substitute a planned U.S. hotel, an employer’s office, or a relative’s convenient address merely because you expect to visit or receive mail there. The application asks about different addresses for different purposes, and the answers should accurately reflect your situation. [1][2]
Separate residence from mailing and travel information
A current home address, a mailing address, a U.S. contact address, and the address where you plan to stay can legitimately differ. Read each field before copying information across the application. If you are studying or working away from a family home, answer according to the actual question rather than trying to make every address match.
Include the apartment or unit, city, region, postal code, and country where applicable. Use the form’s options when a particular field genuinely does not apply. Do not invent a postal code or erase a meaningful unit designation simply to make an address look more familiar.
Follow the language instructions
The Department of State says DS-160 answers must generally be in English using English characters, except where the form specifically requests the name in the native alphabet. Question translations can help users understand the application, but do not change the language required for the answers. [2]
Review transliteration and address order for clarity. The goal is an accurate, usable address, not an artificial translation that changes the place being identified.
If you moved or made a mistake
Before submission, correct the saved application and review the full form. After submission, follow the instructions of the embassy or consulate handling the case. State’s FAQ specifically directs applicants to the post for instructions after corrections or completion; a new confirmation number can also affect appointment handling. [2]
A genuine move and an intentionally false original answer are different facts. Keep the relevant dates and explain the change accurately. Do not conceal an inconsistency because the old address appears on another document.
Before the interview
- Check that each address answers the correct question.
- Review all answers even if a preparer entered them.
- Keep the application confirmation page.
- Follow the post’s correction and appointment instructions.
The DS-160 is only one stage of visa processing. See admission issues at an H-1B port of entry and the separate effect of an approved inadmissibility waiver for later stages where accurate records remain important.
