Getting an SSN After an EAD: Application and Follow-Up

An Employment Authorization Document and a Social Security number card are different documents, issued through different agencies. If you properly requested an SSN card through the available I-765 process, USCIS sends the relevant data to SSA after approval. Otherwise, you can apply through SSA using the required evidence. [1][2]

Check whether an SSN was requested

Review your submitted I-765 and the current USCIS/SSA instructions. Do not assume receiving an EAD means a separate SSN application was necessarily completed. If the request was made correctly, SSA says a separate office application generally is not required solely to repeat it. [1]

The EAD itself remains evidence of the authorization it provides; the SSN card does not independently grant immigration status or extend employment authorization. Employers must use the applicable verification rules rather than treat a number alone as universal permission to work.

When the card does not arrive

SSA’s current guidance says to contact it if the requested card has not arrived 14 days after receiving the EAD. That is a follow-up instruction, not a guarantee that every case will be completed within an identical period. Verification, address, or data issues can require attention. [1]

Have the EAD, relevant notices, correct address, and application information available. Avoid submitting contradictory duplicate requests without explaining the earlier request.

Applying directly with SSA

Use SSA’s official first-number process and complete any required appointment or document review. Provide original documents or other evidence accepted under the agency’s rules; SSA does not generally accept ordinary photocopies or notarized copies as substitutes for required originals. Identity, age, and immigration or work-authority evidence can all matter. [2]

If you already have an SSN, a new EAD does not ordinarily mean you should obtain another number. Ask whether a replacement card or record update is appropriate instead.

Example: a name mismatch

An EAD uses one legal name while a prior SSA record uses an earlier name. Bring the supporting name-change documents and explain the history. A corrected application should connect the records accurately rather than create a second identity.

Keep receipts, appointment information, and agency correspondence. Check that the final card and record use the correct name and any applicable work restriction.

If an employer asks about a delay, distinguish the pending number process from your actual employment-authorization evidence. Do not invent a number to complete a payroll field; use the lawful process the employer and SSA prescribe.

A legal name change requires coordinated SSA and EAD updates. An incorrect number already submitted involves a separate correction process.
