A USCIS correction letter should identify the case, state exactly what is wrong, supply the correct information, and explain the supporting evidence. The letter is often only one part of the correction process. Whether you need a service request, replacement application, or another filing depends on the document and who caused the error. [1][2]
Choose the procedure before writing
USCIS’s typographic-error service explains that a notice, document, or card containing an agency error may qualify for a Typographic Error request. If the information is wrong for another reason, such as a legal name change, USCIS directs applicants to the applicable replacement or correction instructions. [1]
A general cover letter does not replace a required form, signature, fee, or evidence. USCIS regulations require benefit requests to follow the applicable instructions. Do not send an original card to a guessed address or assume every correction is free. [2]
Information to include
- Your full name, current mailing address, and relevant A-number.
- The receipt number, form type, and document or notice date.
- The incorrect entry and the precise replacement entry.
- A concise explanation of whether the original application was accurate.
- A list of supporting copies and a clear request for correction.
Illustrative wording
“I request correction of the date of birth on the notice identified above. The notice shows May 12, 1994. The correct date is May 21, 1994, as shown on my birth certificate and passport. My submitted application lists May 21, 1994. I enclose copies of the notice, the relevant application page, and the supporting identity records. Please correct the record and advise me of any further required steps.”
Use your actual facts and documents. If you made the original mistake, say so clearly instead of blaming USCIS. If the correction involves a disputed legal conclusion or denial, a typo letter may be the wrong remedy and will not necessarily preserve a review deadline.
Keep the complete submission and delivery or electronic confirmation. For document-specific issues, see correcting an employment authorization card and finding and managing a USCIS online account.
