How to Cancel HealthCare.gov Insurance Without a Gap

You can end a HealthCare.gov Marketplace plan through your Marketplace account, or contact the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596 for help. [4] First confirm when replacement coverage actually starts. Ending coverage for everyone and removing only some household members can produce different end dates. Do not assume canceling an automatic bank payment or simply stopping premiums is the same as requesting a Marketplace termination. [1]

Rules that determine the answer

HealthCare.gov says coverage for everyone on an application can end as soon as the day it is ended, or on a selected later date. When only some people are removed, coverage often ends immediately but may end at month’s end in specified circumstances involving remaining household members or financial assistance. The Marketplace confirms the actual date after the application update. A blanket “fourteen days’ notice is always required” does not describe the current consumer instructions. [2]

Report income, household, and other coverage changes promptly because they can change eligibility for advance premium tax credits. Ending the policy does not erase the need to reconcile credits for covered months when applicable. [3] Voluntary cancellation also does not automatically create a Special Enrollment Period to buy another Marketplace plan later. During ordinary plan changes at Open Enrollment, follow the enrollment workflow rather than assuming a separate immediate cancellation is necessary. [1]

What to do next

  1. Log in, open the relevant application and enrollment information, and use the cancellation instructions for ending everyone’s coverage or reporting a change affecting particular people.
  2. Keep people on the application as required for household and financial-assistance information; ending someone’s insurance is not always the same as deleting them from the household.
  3. Select or confirm the last covered day and retain the confirmation. If help is needed, use the official Call Center information rather than an unsolicited cancellation service.
  4. Check the insurer’s final billing and automatic-payment status, and retain Marketplace tax records for the months coverage was active.

Practical example

A new employer plan starts July 1. The household verifies that date and requests Marketplace coverage through June 30. Canceling on June 10 for immediate effect would create an avoidable gap. If only one spouse joins the employer plan, the remaining spouse’s Marketplace coverage and assistance need their own application update.
