Use USCIS’s official Case Status Online service with the receipt number for the application or petition you want to check. A person with several filings can have several receipt numbers and different updates. The public status tool does not combine every immigration matter into one record. [1]
Start with the right identifier
The USCIS receipt number generally contains13 characters. Copy it from the receipt notice and follow the tool’s entry instructions. An A-number, online access code, consular case number, or payment reference is not interchangeable with that receipt number. [1]
If the system rejects it, compare characters carefully and distinguish a newly issued notice from a missing receipt. An invalid-number message does not itself establish denial. Avoid entering identifying information on unofficial sites promising to activate a case.
An online account may also provide notices, documents, or response functions available for that case. Check actual documents rather than relying entirely on a short status headline. Paper notices remain important.
Processing times and inquiries
USCIS’s processing-time tool requires the relevant form, category, and handling office. A published estimate does not guarantee a decision by a particular date. Use the agency’s inquiry eligibility and the case-specific information rather than comparing unrelated applicants. [1]
The official case-processing inquiry service requests the receipt information needed to evaluate a delayed case. Different channels handle missing notices, typographical errors, account access, and processing-time concerns; choose the one matching the actual problem. [2]
Example: an approved petition, pending adjustment
A family might see I-130 approved while I-485 remains pending. That is not necessarily a contradiction: the petition and adjustment application decide different matters. Review each receipt and notice separately, including any request for evidence or interview.
Keep a simple table of form, receipt number, filing date, latest notice, and next required action. Save inquiry confirmations and dates of contact. Repeated identical requests do not substitute for answering a notice.
A technical problem or unanswered inquiry does not automatically extend a deadline. Continue addressing written appointment, evidence, or appeal instructions.
Finally, use the correct agency. State Department visa applications and immigration-court cases have different status systems. A USCIS search result cannot be used as a complete account of either one, and a transfer message should be interpreted alongside the official transfer notice.
For a rejected number, review receipt-number troubleshooting. After fingerprinting, compare the next green card processing steps with the notices actually issued.
