Earning above substantial gainful activity does not always stop SSDI immediately. The result depends on whether you are in a trial work period, an extended period of eligibility, or a later stage. SSA’s work-incentive rules must be applied to the actual work history and countable earnings. SSI follows different rules and does not have the SSDI trial work period. [1][2]
Know the 2026 amounts, but do not confuse them
For 2026, SSA lists monthly SGA amounts of $1,690 for a nonblind individual and $2,830 for a statutorily blind individual. The trial-work service-month amount is different: SSA lists $1,210 for 2026. These numbers perform different functions, and self-employment can require additional analysis. [1][2]
A trial-work month is not simply a month in which the final SGA calculation is exceeded. During the trial work period, qualifying beneficiaries can test work and continue benefits under the program’s conditions. The period generally uses nine service months within a rolling sixty-month window. [2]
After trial work, the EPE matters
The extended period of eligibility includes a thirty-six-month reentitlement period. During that period, payment can resume for months when work falls below SGA and the other requirements remain satisfied. SSA’s instructions distinguish that reentitlement window from the broader technical duration of the EPE. [3]
The first work-based cessation after trial work includes a grace period: SSA’s 2026 fact sheet describes payment for the cessation month and the following two months. That does not mean every later month above SGA receives a new three-month grace period. [2]
Gross pay is not always the final countable amount
SSA may consider applicable work incentives, such as qualifying impairment-related work expenses, in deciding whether work is SGA. Preserve pay records and documentation of expenses or special work circumstances. Do not deduct an expense informally and assume SSA accepted it. [4]
Report work and review notices
- Keep the dates and earnings for every job or self-employment activity.
- Ask SSA which trial-work months it has recorded.
- Report changes and retain confirmation.
- Check cessation and overpayment notices for the months and calculations used.
Qualifying expedited reinstatement can be available after benefits terminate, subject to its conditions. [4] See Social Security overpayment options and gambling winnings versus work income for related distinctions.
