A green card’s expiration does not by itself terminate lawful permanent resident status. While an N-400 is pending, the applicant still needs usable evidence of that status and must continue complying with the naturalization process. A pending case does not make the applicant a citizen. [1] [2]
Check the extension language on the N-400 receipt
USCIS’s policy effective December 12, 2022 provides a twenty-four-month card extension for covered naturalization applicants through the N-400 receipt notice. The notice is used with the expired card and extends documentary validity from the card’s expiration under the stated policy. Read the actual receipt rather than assuming all notices are identical. [3]
The extension is evidence of continuing residence, identity, and work authorization under the applicable conditions; it is not approval of citizenship. Keep the original receipt and a copy of both sides of the card. An applicant who filed before the policy’s applicable date may need a different documentation route.
When replacement or temporary evidence may be needed
A lost card presents a different issue from an expired card that can be presented with a valid extension notice. USCIS’s policy explains that applicants who lose their card generally still need Form I-90, and temporary evidence may be relevant where available documentation is insufficient. The replacement regulation supplies the framework for card requests. [1] [3]
Before work verification or travel, identify the documents accepted for that particular purpose. Do not assume an online case-status screenshot substitutes for the required card, notice, or temporary evidence.
Continue handling the citizenship case
Attend appointments, respond to requests, and report relevant address or eligibility changes. If the application takes longer than the receipt’s documentary extension, address proof of residence before a time-sensitive trip or other transaction. The expiration of evidence and the continuation of status are separate questions.
If naturalization is denied, read the stated reason and review rights. The denial does not automatically erase permanent residence merely because the card expired, although a decision raising abandonment, fraud, or another status issue needs its own assessment. Preserve the N-400 notices, current proof, and any replacement filing so that the chronology remains clear. [1] [2]
