There is no public database where you can enter your name and conclusively check every passport-denial restriction. Start with the agency responsible for the possible ground and any notice you received. A passport application-status page tracks an application; it is not a universal eligibility clearance.
Identify the possible reason
Federal passport regulations list mandatory and discretionary grounds involving matters such as certified child-support arrears, certified seriously delinquent federal tax debt, qualifying warrants, certain court or supervision orders, and specified other restrictions. Different agencies supply different certifications or requests. [1]
If child support is the concern, contact the state child-support agency handling the case. For tax certification, review IRS correspondence and contact the IRS about the certification’s status. Paying an amount does not necessarily mean the agency has already transmitted a release.
Criminal and court restrictions need the actual order
The State Department explains how law-enforcement agencies request passport restrictions based on qualifying warrants, court orders, probation or parole conditions, and extradition matters. A criminal record alone is not the same as an active restriction. [2]
Ask counsel or the supervising authority to confirm the current status of the order. A court’s permission to travel and the State Department’s passport issuance decision are related but separate matters.
If you already received a denial
- Read the stated ground and the agency identified.
- Request correction from the authority that supplied inaccurate information.
- Keep proof of payment, vacated orders, or release documentation.
- Follow the review instructions and deadlines in the actual notice.
A passport acceptance clerk cannot necessarily resolve the underlying certification. Filing another application or using a different acceptance facility does not erase the restriction.
For example, a cleared support debt may still require the responsible agency’s certification update before passport processing can proceed. Keep enough time for both steps before booking travel.
See passport issues involving federal taxes and passport applications with an outstanding warrant for two specific grounds. If the only concern is an old minor offense, misdemeanors and passport eligibility explains why that fact alone generally does not establish a passport bar.
