After biometrics, USCIS continues the background, identity, and eligibility work required for the green card application. Biometrics completion is not approval, and it does not establish a fixed number of days until an interview or decision. [1][2]
Watch for the next requirement
The case may proceed to an interview, a request for evidence, transfer, or a decision. Some interviews can be waived when permitted, [3] but an applicant should not skip a scheduled appointment based on another person’s experience.
Keep the mailing address current and review the online account and paper notices. A pending employment or travel application has its own receipt and decision; fingerprints alone do not authorize work or travel.
When progress appears stalled
Compare the form and processing location with USCIS’s current inquiry rules. Preserve receipt numbers, biometrics attendance evidence, and any response confirmations. A quiet online status can mean internal work is continuing, but an unanswered deadline or missing notice requires attention.
If USCIS asks for additional information, answer the actual request by its deadline. Do not send repeated unsolicited duplicate packages merely to trigger an update. Material changes such as divorce, a new arrest, or changed eligibility should be assessed with counsel rather than left for the agency to discover.
Example: no interview notice yet
An applicant may complete biometrics and then receive no public status change for a substantial period. That gap alone does not establish approval, denial, or a lost background check. Review the actual inquiry eligibility for the form and location, and make sure no appointment or evidence notice was sent to an outdated address.
Create a file containing the receipt notice, biometrics appointment, attendance evidence, submitted application, and later notices. If a notice lists a new processing location, use that information when asking about the case. Keep separate applications and family members’ receipt numbers distinct.
When an interview is scheduled, prepare the original documents and updated evidence requested in the notice. Biometrics attendance does not excuse failing to attend the interview. If rescheduling is necessary, follow the stated process and preserve the response. Avoid booking irreversible travel solely because fingerprints are finished; a pending application and any travel document must be evaluated separately.
Use the case-status and inquiry tools for the relevant filing. Concurrent applicants should keep the separate petition and adjustment roles clear.
