There is no fixed rule that I-131 must be approved a set number of weeks after biometrics. Biometrics are one processing step, and some cases reuse prior biometrics. The time remaining depends on the requested travel or parole document, eligibility review, background checks, evidence, and the workload for that category. [1]
Rules that determine the answer
USCIS’s processing tool asks for the form, category, and handling office or operations unit. A broad I-131 historical median is different from the current estimate for your request and is not a prediction measured from the biometrics appointment. Select the category shown by the receipt and instructions rather than compare a reentry permit with an advance-parole or other parole case. [2]
A biometrics completion message is not travel authorization. Leaving before the appropriate advance-parole document is issued can abandon that request and can have separate consequences for an underlying case. The I-131 instructions identify significant travel risks, including removal-order and DACA issues. [1] USCIS provides an emergency advance-parole appointment channel, but an appointment or expedite request does not guarantee approval. [3] Preserve dated emergency evidence and the complete application record. Also check the actual validity dates and number of entries on any approved document; approval after the desired trip date does not retroactively authorize an earlier departure.
What to do next
- Confirm the receipt date, requested document, and current case status.
- Check whether an RFE, appointment, address problem, or missing response is outstanding.
- Use the current processing tool and its inquiry criteria before submitting an outside-normal-time request.
- If urgent travel is supported by a genuine emergency, review the official emergency-appointment route and required evidence before departure.
Practical example
Two applicants attend biometrics on the same day, but one requests a reentry permit and the other advance parole based on adjustment. Their remaining processing times can differ because the benefit and review path differ.
