An “invalid receipt number” message does not by itself mean USCIS denied or lost your case. First verify that you are entering the USCIS receipt number from the notice, rather than an A-number, online access code, payment reference, or State Department visa case number.
Check the characters and system
A USCIS petition receipt number generally has 13 characters: three letters followed by ten numbers. Enter the receipt number in the required format and check easily confused letters and digits. The State Department describes this format for petition-based visa applicants. [1]
A newly issued number or temporary system problem can also prevent a successful lookup. Compare the paper notice with any account documents and retry through the official USCIS case-status service. Avoid entering personal information into an unofficial site offering to “activate” the number.
Escalate with the notice available
If the problem persists, contact USCIS through its official support channels with the form type, filing date, receipt notice, and exact error. Do not file a duplicate application simply to obtain a different number. Keep the original notice and a dated record of inquiries.
An online error does not extend an RFE, appointment, or appeal deadline. Continue complying with written notices while the lookup issue is investigated. If no receipt notice was ever issued, a missing-receipt or lockbox inquiry is a different problem from a valid notice that the status system cannot recognize. [2]
Example: the wrong identifier
An applicant may type the A-number into Case Status Online and receive an error because the tool expects the receipt number for a particular filing. The A-number can link a person to immigration records, while each pending application or petition can have its own receipt. Looking up the correct person with the wrong identifier still produces the wrong query.
If you filed several forms together, compare each receipt notice. An I-130 status update is not an update on a separately receipted I-485 or I-765. Keep a simple table listing form, receipt number, filing date, and latest notice.
When contacting support, provide the error accurately and distinguish an invalid-number message from a valid number showing no recent update. A processing-time inquiry may be inappropriate if the real issue is an unrecognized receipt. Save screenshots without publishing your identifying information in a public forum; another person’s ability to view a similar status does not diagnose your case.
Compare the error with the available USCIS inquiry methods. Correspondence for a transferred case also requires checking Potomac routing guidance.
