Can Retired Military Wear a Uniform With a Beard?

There is no single military-wide rule allowing every retiree to wear a uniform with a beard. Uniform-wear authority, the occasion, and the service’s grooming requirements must all be considered. For example, 10 USC 772 authorizes retired officers of the listed services to wear the uniform of their retired grade; it does not itself create a beard exception. [1]

Army: retirement does not waive appearance standards

Army Regulation 670-1’s retired-personnel provisions describe authorized occasions and uniform choices. Chapter 23 also directs current and former Soldiers using its uniform-wear provisions to conform to the regulation’s wear and appearance standards. Retirement therefore should not be treated as an independent grooming waiver. [2]

The Army’s current official guide and policy updates require a clean-shaven appearance unless an applicable medical exception or religious accommodation is authorized. Check current directives and the terms of any individual authorization, especially because facial-hair policies changed in 2025 and 2026. [3][7]

Navy: distinguish the historical exception from current confirmation

NAVADMIN 124/22 expressly authorized neatly groomed beards for retired male Sailors wearing Navy uniforms at authorized ceremonial events. That was a specific retiree provision, not permission for every veteran or every occasion. The message also anticipated later incorporation, supersession, or cancellation. [4]

The Navy lists newer 2026 facial-hair updates. The 2022 message alone therefore should not be used as conclusive confirmation of today’s permission. Before relying on that exception, obtain the current retired-personnel rule and any applicable later guidance from Navy Uniform Matters. [5]

Air Force and other services: use the correct publication

DAFI 36-2903 contains separate retired-personnel uniform provisions and general beard restrictions with authorized-exception procedures. The ability to choose an authorized retirement-era uniform does not itself establish permission for unrestricted facial hair. Current implementing guidance must also be checked. [6]

Space Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard retirees should obtain their own service’s current rules. A Navy retiree provision does not transfer automatically to another branch, and a separated veteran may fall under a different uniform-wear category from a retiree.

Before a wedding, funeral, or ceremony

  • Confirm your exact status and authority to wear the uniform.
  • Confirm that the event and selected uniform are authorized.
  • Check the current grooming provision and any personal accommodation.
  • Ask the service uniform-policy office to resolve an unclear exception.

Retirement, ordinary separation, and a dishonorable discharge are different statuses. Eligibility for VA benefits based on military service is another separate question. Keep retirement orders and any relevant appearance authorization available when seeking clarification.
