A notice canceling a request for additional evidence should be read as an action on that particular request, not automatically as approval or denial of the underlying immigration application. The exact notice, receipt number, and any later instructions control what the applicant needs to do next.
Identify what was canceled
Compare the canceled request with the original RFE or other correspondence. Record the form, applicant, receipt number, notice date, and items requested. A canceled appointment, withdrawn application, or received response is a different event from cancellation of an evidence request.
Do not infer the agency’s reason solely from theories on a discussion forum. Evidence already received, an erroneous request, or further case action may be suggested by others, but the status message alone does not establish which explanation applies to your case.
Check for a replacement or another open request
Read the written cancellation and all available account documents. Ask whether it expressly withdraws the old request, supplies a new deadline, or refers to later correspondence. Cases filed together can have separate requests, so cancellation on one receipt does not necessarily affect another.
USCIS evidence regulations address requests, response periods, and consequences of incomplete or missing responses. A general status update should not be treated as permission to ignore a still-operative written instruction. [1]
If the cancellation and original deadline conflict or are unclear, seek prompt clarification through the official channel and preserve the inquiry. Do not assume that making an inquiry itself extends the deadline.
Example: a response was already sent
An applicant who mailed an RFE response before cancellation should keep the complete response and delivery evidence. The later notice does not necessarily mean the agency rejected that submission or approved the case. Track what the notice actually states and whether another action follows.
If no response was sent, determine whether the written request was truly withdrawn before deciding not to respond. The task is to resolve the specific instruction, not to predict the eventual outcome from a label.
Keep the record organized
Use official USCIS status tools with the correct receipt and save dated notices or screenshots. A public headline may contain less information than the actual document. The government’s case-status guidance explains the appropriate tool and processing-time inquiry framework. [2]
For an urgent or consequential ambiguity, share the notices with qualified counsel. Avoid duplicate applications or unsolicited documents designed merely to trigger a new status message; they may not answer the question the existing case requires.
A transfer or routing issue can involve Potomac correspondence rules. A rejected lookup is addressed in invalid receipt-number guidance.
