An H-4 visa holder does not necessarily have an Alien Registration Number. H-4 is an immigration classification; the A-number is a separate identifier assigned to an immigration record. Someone with a prior EAD, adjustment application, or other immigration history may already have one, while another H-4 holder may not. [1]
Rules that determine the answer
Form I-539 asks for an A-number “if any” and lists the USCIS online-account number separately. The current form therefore does not require an applicant to invent an A-number just because an extension is being filed. An I-94 number, visa number, passport number, and thirteen-character receipt number must not be substituted for the requested A-number. [2]
SAVE guidance distinguishes A-numbers, I-94s, certificate numbers, receipt numbers, and other identifiers because they serve different verification functions. [1] Possessing an A-number does not independently authorize employment, establish permanent residence, or prove that an H-4 extension remains valid. Likewise, an absence of an A-number does not, by itself, show unlawful status. If applying for an H-4 EAD, evaluate the actual employment-authorization eligibility and evidence rather than treat the number as the qualifying benefit. Retain a consistent copy of the documents used so later applications do not repeat an avoidable identifier error. [2]
What to do next
- Look for an explicitly labeled A-number or USCIS number on prior EADs, green-card-related records, or USCIS notices.
- Compare the label with the number rather than assume every nine-digit sequence is an A-number.
- If none was assigned, follow the form’s instructions for an inapplicable field or online response.
- If records show multiple numbers or a mismatch, raise the discrepancy with the relevant agency instead of quietly choosing a different identifier.
Practical example
An H-4 spouse receives an I-539 receipt beginning with three letters followed by ten digits. That is the application receipt, not an A-number. A later EAD may display a separately labeled USCIS number.
