Cataracts can contribute to a Social Security disability finding, but the diagnosis alone does not qualify someone. SSA evaluates the severity and duration of the vision impairment, corrected functioning, treatment evidence, and ability to work under the applicable program rules. [1]
Check the vision evidence
The adult vision listings address central visual acuity, visual-field loss, and specified visual-efficiency limitations. For example, listing 2.02 concerns remaining vision in the better eye after best correction. Uncorrected reading difficulty alone does not establish that listing. Obtain the actual ophthalmology measurements and testing. [2]
Duration and treatment matter
The impairment generally must meet the 12-month duration requirement or be expected to result in death. Potential improvement with surgery is relevant, but an adjudicator should not simply assume every person can obtain or successfully undergo the same treatment. SSA’s prescribed-treatment policy has specific conditions and good-cause considerations. [1] [3]
A listing is not the only route
If no listing is met or equaled, SSA considers functional limitations and the remaining sequential-evaluation steps. Other impairments can combine with vision restrictions. Document problems with reading, screens, depth perception, safety, mobility, and sustained tasks in a way supported by clinical evidence.
For example, temporary blur awaiting routine treatment presents a different duration issue from persistent severe impairment despite appropriate care.
Document corrected vision and real functional limits
Listing2.02’s benchmark concerns vision in the better eye after best correction, including the specified20/200 threshold. Other vision listings use defined field or efficiency measures, so a routine statement that vision is “poor” is not a substitute for the required test. Ask the provider which measurements were taken and retain the report rather than only a referral note. [2]
For the work-function analysis, explain supported limitations consistently: what can be read, for how long, under what lighting, and with which correction or assistive measures. A claim should not exaggerate complete blindness when useful vision remains. At the same time, an isolated successful task does not necessarily show the ability to sustain full-time work. The medical determination also is only one part of the benefit decision; other program eligibility requirements remain.
Keep examination records, treatment recommendations, outcomes, and reasons for delayed treatment. Appeal an adverse decision within the notice deadline. See free Social Security legal help and disability evaluation of high blood pressure for assistance and combined-impairment questions.
