There is no general U.S. rule requiring every returning permanent resident’s green card to have six months of validity remaining. A card with three months left may be usable, but the expected return date, length of absence, status, and other travel documents must be checked. [1]
Plan for the return rather than only departure
The return-document regulation generally permits the specified permanent resident card for a temporary absence of less than one year. It also contains additional documentary provisions and exceptions. An unexpired card does not by itself establish that a person has maintained U.S. residence during a lengthy or repeated overseas stay. [1]
Compare the card expiration with the actual return itinerary. A trip beginning three months before expiration but ending after expiration requires a different document review from a short trip completed while the card remains valid. Airline boarding and foreign entry documents also require their own checks.
Renewal, extensions, and conditional residence differ
A replacement or renewal request is governed by the card regulation and current instructions. If a receipt extends documentary validity, read its terms and carry the required combination of documents. A filing receipt without the relevant extension language should not be treated as a universal travel document. [2]
Conditional residents must review their condition-removal requirements rather than assume an ordinary I-90 renewal is the appropriate procedure. USCIS’s I-90 instructions specifically distinguish conditional cards nearing expiration from ordinary replacement situations. Check the approval and card type before choosing a form. [3]
Keep the residence question separate
A reentry permit can be relevant to planned extended travel, but it is not a guarantee of admission or preservation of every naturalization requirement. Maintain an accurate trip log and evidence showing the temporary purpose and continuing U.S. ties.
For example, a two-week family visit returning before expiration presents different issues from taking an indefinite overseas job and returning periodically. The later printed expiration on a card cannot resolve that residence question. Before departure, collect the passport, card, any extension or temporary evidence, approval notices, and return plan. Address missing evidence while there is time to use the appropriate agency process rather than rely on an assumption that a pending application will suffice. [1] [2]
