Documentarily Qualified at NVC: Why You Still Wait

A documentarily qualified or documentarily complete NVC case can still wait because an interview requires both an available appointment and, for numerically limited categories, an available visa number. NVC’s document review confirms that the required submissions are complete. It is not a visa approval or a guaranteed interview date. [1]

Separate the two important dates

Your priority date establishes your place in the relevant visa category. Your documentarily complete date reflects when NVC finished reviewing the required fees, application, financial support, and civil documents. These dates serve different purposes.

For a preference case, compare the priority date with the Visa Bulletin’s applicable Final Action Date, using the correct category and chargeability. A date on or after the cutoff is not earlier than it. The Dates for Filing chart does not, by itself, establish that the consulate can issue the visa.

What the scheduling tool can tell you

The State Department’s IV Scheduling Status Tool reports the documentarily complete month and year for which most interviews are being scheduled at the selected post and classification. It helps show the queue’s general position. It does not reserve an appointment for every case from that month. [1]

Embassy capacity, local operations, transfers, vetting, and changes in visa availability can affect timing. Retrogression can stop a preference case even after its priority date was previously current. Immediate relatives avoid numerical preference limits but can still face appointment delays.

Useful steps while waiting

  • Keep email and other contact information current and monitor CEAC messages.
  • Retain the NVC completion notice and identify the assigned consular post.
  • Use the official inquiry process when the case appears outside the post’s reported scheduling range.
  • Follow NVC instructions for keeping the case active and updating documents. [2]

For an F2A child, the FX2 classification explains why exemption from per-country limits does not remove every wait. Review DS-260 and CEAC access if account trouble prevents checking the case. Avoid scheduling a medical exam or buying nonrefundable travel solely because the file is complete; use the interview instructions for the actual post.
