I-485 Household Size: The Revised 2026 Instructions

On the revised September 18,2026 edition of Form I-485, Part 9 Item 57 asks you to describe your family status in your own words. If you include a household size, the instructions say the count should include the people whose income, assets, and liabilities you include in Items 58–60. Do not simply copy the former 2022 regulatory checklist. [1]

Connect the description to the financial answers

Explain the family circumstances relevant to your application and keep the household description consistent with the financial information. A roommate count, a tax-return count, and your sponsor’s household count are not automatically the answer to this question.

For example, if you include a spouse’s finances in the household amounts, the family-status explanation should make that relationship clear. Do not include someone’s assets to strengthen the financial answers while describing the household in a way that conceals whose assets they are.

The 2026 change is important

DHS rescinded the 2022 public-charge regulations effective September 18,2026 and revised the associated framework. Older articles may still tell applicants to add specified co-residing relatives and tax-dependent relationships under the former definition. Check which form and transition rules govern your filing. [2]

The revised instructions also distinguish household income, assets, and liabilities. They direct applicants to exclude means-tested public-benefit income and illegal-source income, and to report household-owned assets and household liabilities as instructed. Do not confuse a financial-information exclusion with permission to omit a separately requested benefits history. [1]

A practical preparation checklist

  • Confirm the accepted form edition and whether you must answer the public-charge section.
  • Draft a concise, truthful family-status explanation.
  • Identify whose finances are included in each following answer.
  • Keep source records and explain unusual support arrangements.
  • Review changes occurring before the interview.

Calculate I-864 separately

The sponsor’s affidavit of support follows its own statutory and form requirements. Do not force its household number to match the I-485 when the applicable definitions or obligations differ. [3]

See the current public-charge framework and coordinating family adjustment filings. Consistency means giving an accurate explanation, not artificially making every form display the same number.
