IRS Form 8879-EMP – IRS Forms, Instructions, Pubs 2026 – If you’re an employer or tax professional e-filing Forms 940, 941, 943, 944, or 945 (including PR/SS versions and amended returns), IRS Form 8879-EMP is the key document that lets you use a personal identification number (PIN) to electronically sign your return. This one-page form replaces a wet signature, speeds up processing, and keeps your filing fully paperless.
Current version: Rev. December 2024 (latest as of February 2026). Download it here: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8879emp.pdf
Why Use Form 8879-EMP?
The IRS strongly encourages e-filing employment tax returns through the Modernized e-File (MeF) system. Form 8879-EMP authorizes the Electronic Return Originator (ERO) to:
- Enter or generate your 5-digit self-selected PIN as your signature
- Transmit the return electronically
- Authorize electronic funds withdrawal (if you owe taxes)
Do NOT send Form 8879-EMP to the IRS. The ERO keeps it for 4 years (or longer if requested).
